My friend has pretty severe ongoing upper back pain from a past accident. He tells me the doctors have done all they can. Would massage help? Are there any other types of treatment available?
Chiropractic spinal adjustment is the standard of care for these sorts of problems. Back pain, Neck pain, Hip pain, etc. are all commonly treated (effectively) by chiropractic treatments alone.
If you need a referral, let me know your zip code by email reply. I can send you a list of doctors of chiropractic in your area.
Have a great day!
EDIT: in reply to the previous person’s answer…chiropractors are doctors who adjust the spine to remove misalignment. They might work on muscles via muscle adjustment, but it is a wrong misconception to call it massage. Chiropractors, in general, do not masage. The treatment that works is chiropractic adjustment.

Yes massage will surely help. Hot tub, and ask for essential oils that can relieve muscle pain.

Upper back pain is less common than lower back pain, but it causes some people a great deal of discomfort. It is most often due to irritation of the muscle or "myofascial" and sometimes has to do with joint problems.
Since your friend was in an (auto?) accident, it could be more complicated- perhaps a herniated spinal disc or osteoporosis fracture combined with muscular irritation.
Massage could absolutely help. There is only one way to try it- just go once. Doctors treat life-threatening conditions and disease symptoms, not root causes. Their job is to patch you up so you can live, not restore you to your original self.
I would highly recommend that he try massage. If cost is an issue, go straight to a massage school, their students usually give massages very cheaply and they are often trying harder than practicing masseuses, which can sometimes make up for experience. Depending on where he lives, he could also try TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine, specifically accupuncture).
If he’s insured and hasn’t seen a Chiropractor, he could also try that as well. They do massage, but are more likely to know something about the injury and less likely to exacerbate the problem. Some holistic specialists might be averse to working on an injured spine.
All in all, there are many other benefits to getting a good massage. Even babies who are massaged grow faster. sleep better, and cry less (there are real studies that prove this). Just from my experience, I good massage can erase weeks worth of stress and change my attitude in minutes.
Good luck to your friend.

I would highly recommend cranial sacral therapy – very very gentle, non-invasive, non-manipulative therapy. I had a slipped disc last year, unreal pain, and this was the only treatment that started my recovery. Brilliant.
