Well as the title says, I get pain in my lower back whenever I do Abdominal exercises. What could be the reason for my back pain? Weak lower pain? Poor form? Im just a little confused and not sure what to do.

What abdominal exercises in particular? A crunch should have no lower back movement, so if it hurts in this situation then it’s due to poor form. When performing a sit up however, you may try to compensate with your lower back if your hip flexors are too weak, if this is the case then either strengthen your hip flexors or stick to abdominal and oblique isolation exercises.

Ive got into a rut of not exercising and have excruciating back pain. Im now planning to pull my socks up and start working out, but can little or no exercise cause this back pain or could it be somthing else.

I’m not an expert but my dad suffers from alot of back pain. I would suggest you do some exercise on your back but not too much as this will hurt it more. Do small amounts and take it easy.

Back pain is something very strange to be honest with you it can be caused by anything eg carrying something even something not heavy it can just go. Even small things like if you use a computer alot and dont sit with you back straight but you have your back curled, the last one is a personal problem for me im trying to sort out.

Hope this helped but i would see your local doctor for more advise on back pain etc as it is a very bad thing to get wrong or leave. Leaving it and thinking i can cope with the pain or sticking loads of painkillers down your throat will not help it will mask the pain and it will slowly get worse, so go to the doctors and they will send you to a specialist who knows alot of exercises etc for back pain.

I started having some lower back problems a couple of weeks ago and want to know of any exercises for the lower back and lower abs, it seems when the back is bothering me, tightening the lower abs eases the pain, so if I could build those up I think it would help.

Matthew,

You are right that the abs are a significant player in the pain. All these systems are linked, but weak core muscles are often one of the major causes of lower back pain. Here is what you can do:

- Whenever you sit on a chair, be sure to rotate and sit on the front of your pelvis instead of the back of the pelvis. It is virtually impossible to sit up straight when sitting on the back of the pelvis.

- Do some stretches, holding them for 15s, where you grab a door frame with your arm and move your body and feet around 180 or 270 degrees.

- Basic Cobra Pose (based on Cobra Yoga Pose): Lay face down on a mat. Arms by your sides palms down. Keep your face down with your chin near your chest and lift your upper body up with your back muscles.

- Basic Fish Pose (based on Fish Yoga Pose): Lay flat on your back on a mat. Arch your back and push up with your elbows keeping your chin near your chest so your head does not tilt.

There are other things you can do and I know a great resource for further investigation. I will post a link below so you can dig deeper.

Good luck ditching this back pain,
John
