Shockwave Therapy is a sound wave (not ultrasound) which is generated by the machine and penetrates deeply into the body. This is the same technology used to break kidney stones into sand so they can be eliminated through urination instead of having surgery to remove them (extra-corporeal shockwave lithotripsy).
